Lecturas de ciencia ficción y fantasía
Aquí os traigo la portada del nuevo libro de Adam Roberts, que se titulará By the Pricking of her Thumb.
La portada es obra del estudio Blacksheep y el libro es la secuela de la recomendable The Real-Town Murders, de la que ya hablamos por aquí.
A pesar de que el autor afirma que nunca escribe secuelas de sus obras, resultará muy interesante ver cómo se desenvuelve en este escenario que ya conoce. Con mi interés por lo menos cuenta.
El otro día me trajeron el tebeo Yo, Robot a casa como un pequeño regalo sabiendo que Asimov fue mi puerta de entrada a la ciencia ficción. Me es muy difícil valorarlo como obra individual porque realmente su lectura para mí ha significado un ejercicio de nostalgia, despertando recuerdos de una época cada vez más lejana.
Yo, Robot adapta al cómic tres relatos de la serie de historias de robots de Isaac Asimov, tomando como hilo conductor una supuesta entrevista a Susan Calvin. Pero esta entrevista en realidad es una excusa, una introducción que solo da pie a los relatos en sí, sin que se aporte prácticamente nada nuevo a la historia.
Los relatos escogidos son de los más característicos de la obra del buen doctor y algo dirá a su favor el hecho de que solo con leer los títulos ya sabía qué iba a pasar, a pesar del mucho tiempo transcurrido desde su lectura. Los guiones son correctos, resumidas pero sin quitarles apenas detalles.
En el aspecto gráfico, la paleta limitada de colores escogida así como el formato apaisado, es un homenaje a la nostalgia, a esas tiras cómicas que se publicaban en los periódicos y que tantas buenas obras nos han servido. Se adapta como anillo al dedo a unos relatos que también son de los años 40, si la memoria no me falla. Se puede notar la influencia de Ives Chalande y de Mique Beltrán en la definición de los personajes y el nivel de atención en el detalle tecnológico consigue captar la atención.
No sé si la obra tendrá interés para un lector que se mueva fuera de estos parámetros nostálgicos con los que estoy midiendo la obra, no sé si será atractiva para las nuevas generaciones precisamente por esa estética aparentemente desfasada. Lo que sí sé es que para mi ha supuesto una lectura emotiva y amena.
Hoy os traigo la que será portada de Ancestral Night, una space opera (¡vivan las space operas!) de la mano de Elizabeth Bear. El diseño corre a cargo de Michael McCartney.
Bear afirma que el libro está influido por autores como James White, C.J. Cherryh, Andre Norton, Octavia Butler, Ann Leckie y Iain M. Banks. Ahí es nada…
La idea es tener varios libros situados en el mismo universo, pero que no serán necesariamente continuación uno del otro. El segundo libro, se titulará Machine.
Esta es la sinopsis del primero:

Ya conocemos cuál será la portada de la nueva obra de ciencia ficción de Brandon Sanderson, una obra juvenil titulada Skyward.
Esta es la sinopsis:

Se ha desvelado la portada de Empire of Silence, la primera novela de Christopher Ruocchio, que promete ser cuando menos llamativa.
Esta es la sinopsis:

Ya nos hicimos eco de la noticia hace un tiempo, pero ahora os traemos la que será portada de la nueva novela de la Compañía Negra, Port of Shadows, obra de Raymond Swanland.
Temporalmente se sitúa entre las dos primeras novelas de la Compañía, The Black Company y Shadows Linger.
El libro se publicará el 11 de septiembre.
He de reconocer que tengo una debilidad especial por el trabajo de José Luis Munuera, como ya se ha podido comprobar por estos lares. Así que cuando vi que se iba a iniciar una nueva línea de Spirou, pero tomando como personaje principal a Zorglub, fue inevitable que el ejemplar cayera en mis manos.
Munuera tiene una innegable vis cómica, visible en otros trabajos en solitario como Los Campbell que está muy presente en esta obra también. Pero no es lo único destacable del tomo. En la parte del guión se trata de una manera muy natural el conflicto generacional entre padres e hijos, la sobreprotección de los vástagos frente a la búsqueda de libertad de estos. Esta dinámica de enfrentamiento da lugar a unos diálogos francamente divertidos. Me encanta también como el autor se burla de sí mismo metiéndose con las continuaciones infinitas de contenidos audiovisuales dentro de un tebeo que de por sí es una nueva continuación. Quizá se cargan demasiado las tintas en el elemento antibelicista que sustenta la narración, pero por contra tenemos una integración racial perfectamente llevada a cabo.
El aspecto visual es sencillamente espectacular. Los personajes estilizados a los que nos tiene acostumbrados el autor se unen con un dinamismo tan bien conseguido en las escenas de acción que entran por el ojo como si se tratara de una secuencia cinemática. Además, hay que destacar que en la edición de Dibukks hay una maravillosa splash-page central en la que recrearse.
El tratamiento del color también es muy adecuado a la historia que se está contando. En general, me parece un muy buen inicio de serie, que cae algo en los tópicos pero que pretende desligarse del resto de Spirou para labrar su propio camino. Es una apuesta arriesgada pero que puede ser muy acertada.
La SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America) ha nombrado a Peter S. Beagle Gran Maestro por sus contribuciones a la literatura de género.
La presidenta de la asociación, Cat Rambo, declaró:
Peter Beagle’s work has been the gateway for multitudes of fantasy readers, but also writers as well, including myself. His work shines a light on the human heart and its beauties even when that heart is flawed and wanting, showing how that beauty arises from such imperfect conditions. Beagle unquestionably belongs among the greats, and I count it a privilege to invite him to be the next SFWA Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master.
Ya sabemos cuál será la portada de The Queen of Crows, la segunda entrega de la trilogía Sacred Throne (sobre la primera, The Armored Saint ya os hablé ayer). El libro se publicará en octubre. La portada es obra de Tommy Arnold con diseño de Christine Foltzer,
